A Guide To Visiting Caye Caulker from Belize.
Hello everyone! It’s been a while and I really miss writing about my travels, so thought maybe I’d get back to it ;). Plus I finally went to Belize and thought I’d write about it :).

First of all, Belize is absolutely beautiful. And one of the most chill places I’ve ever been to. It’s perfect if you’re looking to spend a little down time in a gorgeous location but not on a huge budget.
Getting Here:
I took the red eye from Los Angeles into Belize. Landed a bit early, dropped my things off at my hotel and decided to head straight out. I really wanted to venture over to Caye Caulker.
Day Trip to Caye Caulker:
I checked the ferry times beforehand online and then headed over. It was very hot when I was there. And the ferry terminal is small. Like one room on a tiny strip mall small. I bought my return ticket for the day and went to stand in line to board.
I was feeling a mix of exhaustion from not sleeping the night before and excitement for a new place. I really love traveling. I love how alive you feel and present in the moment. I love seeing our beautiful world. And I love the adventure that comes with it.
It was finally time to board our ferry – yay! I’ll never forget walking onto what looked like a pretty decent ferry. However once on board, they had us all keep walking across to step onto a much smaller boat. Aw, adventure. The rest of the boat was just as confused but we all collectively gave that, ‘when in Rome’ glance and found ourselves a seat. And off we went.
Taking the Ferry to Caye Caulker:
The sea breeze felt amazing on my hot skin as we jetted across the blue waters. I love riding on fast boats. I love being on the sea and I love the spray of water that hits you along the journey.
It wasn’t long until we were pulling up to the little dock of Caye Caulker. This place looks exactly like you’d expect a tropical island to look. Lots of bright colors, chill vibe to the air. I definitely realized I’d found paradise.
Take a Walk and Grab a Snack:
One of my favorite things to do in a new place is walk around and get a feel for the place. Caye Caulker is definitely special. Swinging hammocks and cool beach songs were playing. Lots of little places to eat. I walked all the way down to what they call The Split before deciding I was a bit hungry. I stopped at a cute little outside cafe and had myself a chocolate crepe. I know, not the most authentic of Belize cuisine, but I am a sucker for a good crepe ;).
After my late breakfast I wanted to explore more of the island. I read about a walk that took you around most of the island so I figured I’d head off and do that. I didn’t make it very far before I found a bunch of relaxing chairs overlooking the beautiful water. I knew I had to sit down and partake in the view.
Take Your Time and Enjoy the Hammocks:
After a very relaxing rest, I got up to walk further. I found some hammocks next. And of course I needed to enjoy those for a bit.
I spent quite a while in the hammocks. It really was so relaxing. I’m not too certain if they are open to everyone but I just sat down in them and wasn’t bothered. Boy was it nice. I could definitely get use to that island way of living. So refreshing! And hey, I managed to not fall out of my hammock al la I Love Lucy style ;).
But I still hadn’t made it very far on my walk. I wanted to find this shell wall I read about. And I still needed a proper lunch before my late ferry back to my hotel. So, I continued on.
Take a Walk Around Caye Caulker:
The walk was beautiful. I ran into a few people on golf carts. One gentleman from England asked if I was doing the walk. I said yes and he replied, “wow. Good for you.” Was I getting myself into something more adventurous than I thought? I pressed on.
It really was a perfect walk. And when I came upon my wall made of conch shells, I knew I’d made the right decision to leave my hammock for this ;).
Such a great place for photos! Lots of iguanas! And the place was for sale!
I did not buy it though ;).
Now, a bit further into my walk I soon realized maybe what some of the other people were warning me about. It really was quite a walk. Beautiful yes, but a little further than I was thinking. By the time I reached the airport I decided to cut back across to head back to the main part of the island. It was a bit hot and I was getting hungry again. (I love food!)
Dinner By the Split Sign:
I made it back to town, but the place I really wanted to try was closed. So I kept walking until I found a cute little place on the beach by the Split sign. It was good. I was starting to run out of time though, and I still wanted to go see the seahorse sanctuary. So I headed over to Iguana Reef Inn to see them.
Seahorse Sanctuary:
Now, my only complaint with Caye Caulker and being a solo female traveler, is that the guys on the island do cat call a bit. It was especially so at the seahorse sanctuary. The guys were really kind and harmless, but I really just wanted to see the seahorses ;). It’s nothing to worry about, so don’t feel like you need to stay away by any means, but you will get a few cat calls here and there.
Catch the Ferry Back to Belize:
Now my island adventure was almost up. It was time to head back to the ferry to catch my ride back to Belize City. This time a much larger ferry docked and I hopped upstairs to grab a seat with a view.
Just as the sun was about to set I made it back to Belize City and my cute little hotel. Caye Caulker is well worth a visit. You’ll absolutely love it and there’s a million photo ops. It’s the type of place that you’ll want to slow down for and just enjoy. So take the trip, you’ll be very glad you did. 🙂
Happy travels! 🙂
