Magical Stockholm

It’s been a while since I posted, which I apologize for!  Life sometimes gets in the way, which I’m sure you all can relate to.  But today, I woke up and thought about the most magical time I had in Stockholm last October.  And I just thought I’d share a little about it with you all.  :).

On my last big trip in October (for my birthday), Stockholm was my point of arrival from Los Angeles.  And I loved everything about Stockholm from those first few minutes.  I took the speedy train into the main part of town and then walked to my lovely hotel in Gamla stan.  And boy was it magical!  Lots of cobble stone streets that seemed to just go on forever in between the most charming of buildings.  And it seemed pretty quiet… perhaps because I went in late October?  But it didn’t seem to be filled with tourists which is always a plus for me.

Stay in Gamla stan.

I stayed in the most lovely little hotel in Gamla stan, Hotell Skeppsbron.  The staff were all so incredibly nice!  And you stay downstairs so the rooms did not have windows but they had gorgeous murals painted on the walls as if you did have a window.  And it was a great budget option, and very clean!

Walk Around Beautiful Stockholm.

After dropping off my bags I went out to explore.  Probably my most favorite thing to do in a new city is to just walk around and get a feel for it.  And if I see a place I like I go in.  I was kind of on a mission to see the Vasa Museum as it was so highly recommended to me (and did not disappoint!), so I meandered over in that direction taking stops along the way for a photo or two.

Visit the Vasa Museum!

I will say that I highly recommend the Vasa Museum!  It’s a beautiful and almost entirely intact ship from the 17 century!  Pretty amazing if you ask me.  It was absolutely surreal to witness.  As I walked around the various levels, I imagined what it would have been like to have been on a ship like that (mostly living out my pirate fantasies) ;).  The museum was really great.  There are lots of levels, some old skeletons that give a glimpse at a few of the people from the ship, and other interactive activities.  Really a great way to spend the afternoon.

Try all the Food in Stockholm.

After my visit to the museum I was well ready for some Swedish meatballs.  I know, a bit of an Ikea cliche, but I still wanted to try them ;).  And they were a million times better than any Ikea meatballs I’ve ever had ;).  The food in Sweden is really amazing!

I wandered back around Stockholm for a bit until it started to rain.  That’s when I did one of my other favorite activities, popping into little local cafes for a treat.  I had some amazing sweets while sipping a rather lovely latte and all while sitting by a cute little window watching the world go by.  The world really is filled with so much beauty.  I sometimes forget until I get out there and take the time to see it.

Visit The Royal Palace.

The rest of my time in Stockholm was pretty relaxed.  I was supposed to leave early the next day to head to Finland but I ended up changing my flight (which thankfully I can with my job) to leaving in the late afternoon.  This allowed me to visit the Royal Palace which was so incredibly beautiful!  Every room was so decadent.

I just loved Stockholm so much.  I only spent two days here, but I’d love to go back and explore more.  The people are wonderful, the food is fantastic, and the sights are all so beautiful.  It wasn’t the cheapest city I’ve ever been to though, so if you’re looking for a more budget friendly destination I might pick somewhere else.  But there are ways to go cheaper in Stockholm.  My hotel didn’t cost much.  And my meals were pretty decent.  Had an amazing breakfast for about the equivalent of 12 dollars.  So not bad at all :).
